Viewers on YouTube have astutely pointed out the lighting issues with the series - every scene seems to be washed out in a blue-gray tint. “Impulse” is smart enough to give the other adult characters, such as Cleo and Tom, some meaningful emotional beats of their own. In its story of unlikely outcasts becoming allies, “Impulse” becomes a welcome successor to such teen-centric favorites as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Veronica Mars.” Hasson, 23, creates a believable protagonist, and Elliott, making a welcome return to series TV, makes for one repulsive villain. Jenna wants to help her cope with the sexual assault Townes is determined to help her test the limits of her powers. Oh, and then there’s the assassin who is taking out jumpers across the world.Īs Henry tries to come to grips with her abilities, she gains two unexpected allies. Also investigating is Deputy Anne Hulce (a good Enuka Okuma, “Rookie Blue”), who might be the only person Bill can’t buy or bully. His son’s injuries put him on a bloody path that leads to Henry. Henry “jumps” - that is, teleports - to her bedroom.Ĭlay’s father, Bill (David James Elliott, “JAG”), runs a car lot and just about the entire town, through his illegal drug trade. Her psychic distress demolishes the vehicle and critically injures Clay. Later, when Clay (Tanner Stine, “The Thundermans”), a high school jock, sexually assaults Henry in his truck, she has another seizure. Henry’s seizures are not new, but the side effects are becoming inescapable. She collapses into a seizure, and in the pandemonium, only Townes notices that everything in the classroom is shaking. When a teacher torments Townes (Daniel Maslany, “Murdoch Mysteries”), an autistic student, Henry intervenes and becomes a target for the abuse. Cleo’s latest boyfriend, Tom (Matt Gordon), runs a bowling alley and has a teenage daughter, Jenna (Sarah Desjardins), who treats Henry like a case of mono. Her mother, Cleo (Missi Pyle, “Gone Girl”), is a failed singer-turned-waitress who has a habit of moving in with men and uprooting Henry every few months. She blows off steam by smoking weed and going out at night to spread her graffiti all over her tiny, isolated city. Henrietta (Maddie Hasson, “Twisted”) - Henry to everyone in the world - is a moody, mouthy 16-year-old who’s seen it all, lived it all. Now it has dropped “Impulse,” a 10-episode drama loosely based on the novel of the same name by Steven Gould and part of the “Jumper” series of books and the 2008 action sci-fi film “Jumper” that starred Hayden Christensen and Rachel Bilson. Through YouTube Premium, its ad-free, subscription platform, it has been offering such original fare as “Cobra Kai,” the recent continuation of the “Karate Kid” franchise with original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. 2 most visited website is now trying to compete with Netflix, Hulu and Amazon with its own unique, professionally produced TV fare.
